Our February guest speaker is Dr. Amanda Skidmore, an entomologist specializing in integrated pest management in agriculture systems. Dr. Skidmore will talk about Tropi mites. Tropi mites, or Tropilaelaps mites (T. mercedesae, T. clareae), are harmful external parasites of honeybees, native to Asia, that feed on developing brood, causing deformities, virus transmission (like Deformed Wing Virus), and colony death, posing a severe threat that some experts believe could be worse than Varroa mites. These tiny, fast-moving, reddish-brown mites are a major concern for beekeepers worldwide, although they are not yet established North America.
