MHBC Members: Several of the weak and lost colonies at the MHBC Riverside Apiary have been re-colonized. It will be interesting to see how they are doing! Please bring a bee suit and gloves.
Our May field trip will be a potential swarm rescue. MHBC members who want to learn how to capture a swarm or just enjoy the delightful process of swarm rescue can sign up for the field trip, click the "Read More" button.
Like many apiaries across the country, the MHBC Apiary at Riverside Cemetery struggled this winter. We may find a “deadout”. All beekeepers lose bees sooner or later, which provides an opportunity to understand the cause of the loss and hopefully reduce chances of this happening again in the future. A thorough inspection might tell us a great deal. What management practices may be required or changed to improve colony health? If the colony did not survive, what must be done to prepare the hive for recolonization? - Since we don’t yet know the cause of problems at the apiary, please wear a pair of disposable nitrile or latex gloves. - Bring protective gear (bee suit / veil)
Attention: The MHBC Apiary visit on Saturday, March 29, 2025, has been canceled because the weather forecast is calling for rain. We will reschedule for an upcoming weekend. Thanks for understanding.
