September 8 MHBC Meeting

Join us on Tuesday, September 8 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM Mountain Time for a MHBC meeting at the Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia Street, Denver, CO 80220. Our September guest speaker is Dr. Amanda Skidmore PhD, State Apiarist, Kentucky, since May of 2024. Dr. Skidmore will talk about Tropi mites. Tropi mites, or Tropilaelaps mites (T. mercedesae, T. clareae), are harmful external parasites of honeybees, native to Asia, that feed on developing brood, causing deformities, virus transmission (like Deformed Wing Virus), and colony death, posing a severe threat that some experts believe could be worse than Varroa mites. These tiny, fast-moving, reddish-brown mites are a major concern for beekeepers worldwide, although they are not yet established North America. 7:00-8:15 PM. Our September guest speaker is Dr. Amanda Skidmore PhD, State Apiarist, Kentucky, since May of 2024. Dr. Skidmore’s responsibilities include identifying infectious diseases for honeybee colonies and helping to eradicate those diseases. In addition, she will help to educate the non-beekeeping public about the importance of honeybees and offer best advice practice to the beekeeping community.
